Come on over to Unruly Paper Arts and join us for the November Challenge.

How to Play along with our Reader Art Quests

RAQ 1.

Each Month you must use our creative prompt - This will be a word or phrase -  our November Creative Prompt is 'Santa Claus is Coming To Town'.  You can take extra inspiration from the other photos and colors provided.

I am so not a shopper.  I am so thankful for Gift Cards.  I decided to make a small box to fit a gift card with a matching treat bag and tag that fit into the bog.

Creative Embellishment's November Challenge

Hello all.  It is time for a new challenge over on the blog for Creative Embellishments.

This month you will be inspired by our inspiration picture below and show us what you are thankful for. If it isn’t obvious please let us know how you  were inspired by in the picture and what you are thankful for in your post. We look forward to see what everyone creates.

My take on the challenge this month was to do a thankful banner.  I was inspired by the colors in the photo.  I chose to use browns, coppers, greens.  I used the autumn leaves set  painted in TH Forest Moss distress paint.  I used TH chit chat stickers with words such as believe, family, hope, dreams, etc.  As life throws us curveballs, it is important to remind ourselves of all the good things in our lives.

Altered Gumball Machine for Creative Embellishments

Kelley here.  I had an absolute blast making this project with all the fabulous chippies from CreativeEmbellishments.com.  I gutted the machine so that I was left with the base, the globe, and lid.  I base coated with two coats of gesso and then added a texture mix of heavy texture cream and course texture gel. Lots of layers of acrylics were added on top.  For the lid I added bling for rivets.  I finished off the top with an awesome airship.  I stained it with rusty hinge and frayed burlap distress stains.  I inked, added copper metallic cream, and a little salty ocean distress paint.

For the inside.  I made a new base from chipboard for everything to sit on.  I used two photo corners painted in ancient gold to put on the base along with large gear in the center to keep the surface even.  I used a block covered in paper and large gears sprayed in Lindy's Stamp Gang Red Hot Poker Orange to layer all the fussy cuts and chipboard pieces on.  I used the Graphic 45 Steampunk Collection for all the images.  I added a large photo corner for interest and structural support to hold up the chipboard clock.  The photo corner was painted with ancient gold and then lightly misted with LSG Tibetan Poppy Teal and the clock was embossed with TH Vintage Photo distressed embossing powder, then touched with Patina Gilder's paste, Prima inks, etc.  There were a few other gear's sprinkled in. I added some fussy cut butterflies, a metal heart, and a G45 metal clothes pin to finish off the inside.

On the back, I had to add wings.  Not a choice - they were begging to be used.  Love, love, love how detailed they are.  Absolutely gorgeous.  Painted with burnt sienna, burnt umber, and ancient gold then topped with a little TH Rock Candy crackle paint.

To the front I added a prima piece over the coin slot. I used steampunk frame chippie that I trimmed down to fit the front panel and painted with burnt sienna and burnt umber acrylic paints then covered in Rock Candy crackle paint. I layered with more gears and propellers covered in copper metallic and black coal prima chalk ink.  I used a few prima metal gears and metal pieces.  I touched over the gears with TH Salty Ocean distress paint. I added a few fussy cut butterflies along with some ball chain in the gumball slot to finish off the front.

At the CE blog (CreativeEmbellishment.com/blog) they host a monthly challenge with a chance to win a $25 gift card to the store.  They have the most wonderful chippies, wood veneers, stamps, and flair.  Hope to see you there.

Steampunk Top Hat Featuring Creative Embellishment Chippies

Hello everyone. It is my first solo post at CreativeEmbellishments.Com/blog.  I had so much fun with the October challenge, I just couldn't wait to get started on my next project.  Although I can appreciate all styles, I am a lover of steampunk and grunge.  I keep a crafty "bucket list" of items I would like to make so I don't forget about them.  I have had mini top hat on my list for quite a while.  I couldn't resist making one with all these wonderful gears.

For the top hat, I used Graphic 45 Steampunk Debutante paper.  I love brown and black together with pops of metallic and patina.  I used a pleated trim to go around the base of the hat and thin black ribbon to go around the top to give it a finished look.  I created a band using Tim Holtz Grunge paper and used Frayed Burlap, Vintage Photo, and Black Soot to ink it up to give the look of letter.  Instead of eyelets, I couldn't resist using the Steampunk Mini Gears 3/4" instead.  I painted them black and then used TH distressed embossing powder in Vintage Photo.  I added DecoArt Copper and Gilder's Paste in Patina.  I finished off with some twine to tie the bands together.

For the side of the hat I had a blast.  There are feathers galore, copper wire spirals touched with a hint of patina, a fabric flower, and gems.  The real stars of the show are the chippies. I started off with a flourish that I painted in black and treated it the same way as I had done for the gear eyelets.  Then I layer over the top of it with gears and propellers  ( Steampunk Mini Gears 3/4" , propellers, gear set 2 large, gear set 2 medium)painted black then embossed using beautiful Lindy's Stamp Gang two toned embossing powders.

October Challenge for Creative Embellishments - NEW/BETTER PICTURES ADDED

Hi everyone.  So excited to share with you my challenge for the October challenge at CreativeEmbellishments.com/blog.  I absolutely was inspired by the wonderful chipboard pieces they carry in their store at CreativeEmbellishments.com.

This challenge was so much fun.  I love Halloween.  I was so inspired by the creepy gates that I knew I had to incorporate them into my project.

The carousel:   The carousel is from the wonderful SVGCuts.com.  I did modify the pattern a bit to accommodate the battery operated lazy susan on the bottom.  It spins on its own - so cool.  The patterned paper is Eerie Tale from Graphic 45 and the card stock is from Bazzill.   I added spider webbing, flourish borders, and spiders to the top.  The top comes off so that you could stash treats or a small gift.

On the crown of the carousel, I used the web borders from Creative Embellishments.  I painted with black distress paint, added glossy accents and black and silver micro beads.  Once dry, I cut them into sections to fit.  When I saw the witches at Creative Embellishments, I was over the moon and had to have one flying over the carousel.  I painted with black distress paint and then added TH distress glitter.  I added skulls, spiders, and fussy cuts to spook it up a bit

Talk about bling - I used close to 1600 pieces of bling around the crown.  Labor of love, but definitely worth it.

The horses: were cut and layered with black Bazzil paper that I highlighted with purple stickles and layered over purple glitter paper.  I trimmed the hooves so that the purple would show through.  Instead of using this as a cupcake holder, I trimmed straws and modified the base a little so that it would look more like a traditional carousel.  On the inside piece I used plum cardstock, purple glitter stock, and black ravens.

The base:  I took a tray and turned it upside down and added two layers of chipboard so that it was level before covering it with paper. This also came in handy to puncture holes into to allow the graveyard, pumpkin patch, and fussy cut images to stand up straight.  I used Graphic 45 Eerie Tale for the base.  For the gates and fence, I painted heavy cardstock with black paint and then added some Rub and Buff in silver leaf to give a distressed look.  I added Rub and Buff to the tombstones as well.  The pumpkin patch and images are fussy cut from the Eerie Tale.

This was so much crazy fun to make.  I have to say that Creative Embellishments makes wonderful chipboard pieces.  They are detailed and stand up to inking, spraying, and what ever else you want to do to them without falling apart.  Their store is creativeembelishments.com.  Come join in the challenges and fun at their blog creativeembellishments.com/blog.
